Come Chill with Me

Let me take you on a little trip. This past weekend was as relaxing as relaxing can be.  Come along and relive it with me.

Friday we fought some nasty traffic to get to the Texas hill country. It was like there was conspiracy of stupid people getting on the road at once and trying to drive. All of that created stress. I played on my phone most of the way while Chuck gritted his teeth as people drove like complete morons.

Finally make it to the beautiful hills around 5pm. Ahhhhh. Time to exhale.

We arrive at Canyon Lakeview Resort and unpack the food supplies. We made sure to pack the essentials.
The property had peafowl. We named the peacock Hector. He's very interested in the latest peafowl fashion. Heard one lady talking on the phone: "Yeah, they got peacocks here. They're kind of like a flamingo but with a 7 foot tail."  Flamingo?! Really? *eye twitch*
After being on the road for a few hours we just wanted to stretch out and take in the scenery. Rachel used a picnic table as her personal hammock.
"What are we doing for dinner?"
Trees: they're for climbing and sh*t, yo.
Ahhhh. Time to relax with beer and Facebook.
Deer are cute when they're in the woods. Wild. In small numbers. These guys roam the neighborhood and are tame. They have blanketed the lawn in deer "gifts" and it leaves a certain odor in the air. It's more like having goats than a wild animal. Deer lost much of their mystique on this trip and became more of a delicious farm animal.
Time to head to the very small market for food and supplies. Oh and they sell hats! I prefer tiaras. They sparkle more.
Back at the resort we sat on the porch and watched the sun say goodnight. There was a gentle breeze blowing and all was right with the world.
And there were drinks and many deer.
We shall name this one Venison. Vinnie for short.
The sunset was absolutely incredible. It almost looked fake!
As evening approached we fed the venison deer some bread. They really were cute.
Another overheard conversation: "Don't give them too much corn. They can't digest corn like we don't." Oh, your words hurt my ears!
Look how tender tame they are!
Have I shown you the view from the porch yet? Ahhh. Saturday morning. Perfect weather. I'm feeling very relaxed.
Let's not even pretend we ate healthy on this trip. Our grocery cart looked like a stoner had gone grocery shopping. Chuck cooked up some scrambled eggs, bacon, and slightly blackened biscuits.  We forgot to buy cheese at the store BUT we did have squirt cheese. Redneck breakfast coming right up.
Whew! All of this relaxation is tiring! We head to the lake where the water was so blue!
I begin my search for fossils.Got a nice little souvenir.
I built a cairn to mark the momentous event of finding the fossil. I am a bad cairn builder though. The wind blew and it toppled. Not a cairn in the world.
Chuck, not to be outdone by the little lady, builds a much larger cairn. Nice. What's the occasion?
The water is pretty cold but that doesn't stop Charlie from a little swim.
Deep thoughts. "I wonder if my scotch is chilled."  "Where could I find a job here so I can move?" "Why is Kelly taking my picture?" "How long do I have to hold this pose?" "Why aren't there locks on the bedroom and bathroom doors here?"
Chillin' on the rocks. Disregarding the spiders that sometimes run across those rocks.
Whew!!! All of that relaxing made me thirsty!
After getting cleaned up we head t Gruene for some fine dining. It's pronounced "green". If you live in Texas you must go visit here.
Oldest dance hall in Texas is right here.
The Gruene River Grill overlooks the beautiful Guadalupe River. So relaxing to watch people float by on tubes.
Let's start with some fried artichokes.
I'll have the incredible fish tacos!!
And a Mexican martini. Ugh. I said something so stupid. I love puns and stupid pick up lines for some reason. So when the waitress brought the drink out I said, "Oh, look how beautiful. And the drink is pretty too." Then my family laughed at me and said, "That wasn't awkward at all." It seemed funny at the time but I can't take it back now. Oh well.
I did eat the serrano pepper on a dare and it was very hot. I like hot food but WOW!

Leaving the restaurant there was a little pond with a waterfall and these lilies blooming. Just a great experience all around.

We had a great time just enjoying the views and relaxing and laughing together. Of course it was over way too soon.  But I have plans to go back to the hill country next month for another visit. This time we'll be a bit more active and participate in some tubing and maybe a little hiking.

Hope you had a great weekend too. My batteries are now recharged and I'm ready to get back to kicking some serious butt in the exercise department!!!

Buckle Up

It's been a few days since I've posted here. Sorry about that, guys. I mostly share the good things about my life here but, as a friend says, it's not always peaches and cream.

Yes, there have been a few bumps in the road lately. And those bumps carry over into my exercising and eating habits. Quite honestly, I haven't felt like doing much of anything. Not cooking, hiking, riding bikes doing exercises.

I think most of the bumpy parts are finished. So today I will be getting back to exercising and cooking whether I want to or not. I have this little mantra that goes: you don't have to like it; you just have to do it.  And I'll be saying that as I swing the hell out of some kettlebells and activate those glutes to the ceiling with some raises, etc.

Life is still good. I have a good life. But the bumps sometimes throw me for a curve and derail me. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. I tend to neglect myself or sabotage myself when I hit the extra bumpy parts of the road. I let the road toss me about instead of taking control of the one thing that I do have control over and that's my health.

Today, I'm back. I'm back to blogging. I'm back to cooking. I'm back to exercising. I'm back to taking care of myself. I'm back to shaving my legs. Hey, I told you I let things go!

Thanks for sticking around and thanks to the folks who checked in on me. It is appreciated. Now let's go swing some kettlebells!!!

Weigh In and Fun Stuff

Scales. I love them when they say sweet things to me (in other words, what I want them to say) and despise them when they don't. I hadn't been doing the daily tango with the scale last week. Quite honestly, I was just tired of it.

But I did take a peek at the scale and got a pleasant surprise. Down 3.5 pounds for the week. Yay me!!

I'm afraid I didn't stick to my protocol very well that week either. I didn't eat breakfast. Just wasn't hungry. But I've discovered that hunger comes in waves so I'm just going with it this time instead of fighting it.

It's become pretty routine now. The only thing I did not do was run. I mostly got in strength training and biking. I'm loving my bike right now. :)

A typical Monday, Wednesday, Friday looks like this:
50 kettlebell swings at 30#
20 two legged glute activation raises
15 flying dogs
90 squats
90 chest pulls
90 wall pushups  Still trying to transition wall pushups to the stairs then to the floor. Those things are tough!!! But I am starting to notice a little more muscle definition in the arms. Not much but a little.

I also like to bike at least 6 miles on those days. It's usually closer to 10 miles.

This week I'll start back in with the running.
The FUN Stuff

Another busy weekend.
But before I get to the weekend I have to share some pics I took at my (yes, it belongs to me. I'm sure it does) Brazos Bend State Park. This place can make me feel serene no matter what stress is going on in life. I love it here.
Let me paint a picture for you. There was a hawk circling over head, a woodpecker in the distance, whistler ducks flying in to swim on the lake, and a slight breeze. The weather was warm and perfect. The Spanish moss swayed gently from the live oaks. I could spend so much time here.
I only spotted one alligator. This little guy. I walked for a while looking for more. Unfortunately I wore flip flops. Don't ask me why. I wasn't thinking. But I have some lovely blisters to show for it.

Saturday I tried to go to a transition clinic for triathlons but when I got there the parking lot was packed. Not one place to park. I drove around for 13 minutes then got ticked off and left. Ugh.

The rest of the day was spent cleaning up the house and being a bit lazy.

Sunday was a lot of fun. We took the whole family and Rachel's boyfriend to Galveston for the day. The idea was to go swimming but the waves and rip tide were so bad that they couldn't.
There was a hotel over the water called the Flagship at one time but it was destroyed during hurricane Ike. Now the pier is being rebuilt as an amusement park. Roller coasters!!! A little something about me: roller coasters scare me so bad that I cuss like a sailor on them. I don't even know I'm doing it.
Along the seawall there was a pretty educational bench.
We made our way to Murdoch's and relaxed on the deck with a beer. Rachel and her bf went off for a walk. Charlie searched the shop for trinkets to buy. And I listened to the waves. It's so cool to see them roll under the deck. Ahhhh.....relaxation.
Charlie working on his stalker skills. Well done, son.
He got a shark tooth necklace and a bag of gummy worms. Such a cute kid!
This poor pigeon was being blown around my the wind. I'm telling you the waves were incredible. It was deafening.
Time to head to Fish Tales for some grub. We go here from time to time. It's pretty good but way overpriced. It may be time to try a new place.
 Another educational bench!! So pretty.
What would a trip to Galveston be without a stop at LaKing's Confectionery?! I just like the atmosphere of this place. How can you not be happy here? I especially like watching the little kids go case to case excited. Great place to people watch.
Check out the colors! They also make several different flavors of saltwater taffy.
Everyone got a chocolate malt but me. I had a bit of something called a sand dollar and two pieces of taffy. Yum!

It was a fun weekend. Hope yours was great too.

This week my focus is on cooking more and getting in my runs.

Hockey, Rowing, Ibuprofen

Happy Easter and Chag Pesach Sameach! What a great weekend!  I hope yours was wonderful too.

Friday night I had some truly kick butt seats to the Aeros hockey game. Check this out!!
There was one little slap fight so it was a pretty tame game. Seriously? No bodies being tossed against the wall the one time I get seats like this?! Where's the testosterone, boys?!
Still had a great time even though the Aeros lost by 2 points. Love me some hockey. I have no idea what the rules are but I do love watching them play. I just know when that little puck goes in the right place a red light comes on and there's a buzzer and the music starts playing and I get to cheer. Yay!

After staying up way too late, we got up at the fun hour of 6:30am on a Saturday. Why, you ask? Oh, a friend asked if I wanted to be a rower in a dragon boat race on May 5th so without even asking questions I said SURE! I've never done that and I love trying new things.

So we arrive at the practice location Saturday morning and learn a few things then we all get in a 40' boat. It doesn't have the dragon head and tail for practice. Guys, this is work! You really have to put your back into it. We rowed back and forth for about an hour and a half. I was breathing hard, sweating and my heart was pounding!

Still very cool and I'm even considering joining a team. Maybe they'll just let me be the chick who bangs the drum.
After rowing I had some breakfast.....
Came home and rode my bike for 15 miles. Woot!

After rowing and biking I was spent! So I got a nice cold drink (rum and diet coke) and kicked back to enjoy the gorgeous Saturday weather. Ahhh. Tough life.
I had even sprayed on some sparkle spray so I would be all shiny in the sun. Pretty. And to make the drink extra special I put a flashing ice cube in it. Fancy!! Love me some sparkles and lights.
Sunday was Easter so we had some custom eggs made for the kids at a chocolate shop. They are HUGE!
The shop also tossed in some adult goodies. Most of these are still on the kitchen bar if you can believe that.
Chuck cooked a big breakfast and then we just relaxed most of the day. Later we went to the in-laws' house for more goodies and the kids played some baseball.

It was really just a perfect weekend. I couldn't ask for anything more. I worked out pretty hard but also balanced that with some relaxation.

How was your weekend?!
